EXCLUSIVE: How to watch the NBA Finals online

The 2014 NBA Playoffs haven't been short on drama, though on the cusp of the NBA Finals we are right where we were exactly one year ago. According to the enigmatic Rust Cohle in season one of True Detective, "time is a flat circle," so we should've expected Miami and San Antonio to clash yet again, right?

After the stinging defeat at the hands of King James and company in last year's Finals, Tim Duncan and the Spurs are out for redemption. For those who forgot what transpired in Game 6 of the 2013 Finals, Ray Allen went all Jesus Shuttlesworth on the Spurs and saved Miami's season with a clutch last second three-pointer. Allen's shot sent the game to overtime where Miami would prevail and tied the series at three games a piece. The Heat would go on to win Game 7 and a bewildered San Antonio team endured a defeat like never before.

As we sit here a year later the storylines are the same though they're as exciting as ever. For starters, not since the 1998 matchup between the Utah Jazz and Chicago Bulls have the same two teams met in consecutive NBA Finals. For stat geeks out there Michael Jordan's Bulls bested Stockton and Malone's Jazz for the second straight year, capping off Jordan's 6th NBA Finals victory.

So will the ageless Tim Duncan and the fundamental Spurs taste revenge over the Heat? Or will LeBron James cap off a historic three-peat with his pals Dwyane Wade and Chris Bosh?

Though, the best question to ask yourself on the eve of this exciting matchup is: where will I watch the NBA Finals online? To help you find a solution to this question we've put together a simple walkthrough for where you can catch all the exciting Finals action.

Network sites

ABC Online

The Disney-owned American Broadcasting Company has aired the NBA Finals on television for over a decade now and is the premiere option for watching online. Though not offered everywhere, ABC plans to stream each of the Finals games through its Watch ABC site. To see if Watch ABC is available in your area simply visit the site and have it locate your market. If you aren't in one of its available areas — like our office here in Portland — then you'll have to resort to a different method to stream the NBA Finals.

Watch ESPN

ESPN — another Disney-owned company — is set to stream the NBA Finals games through its streaming service Watch ESPN. However, you'll only have access to the games with a valid cable provider account. If you subscribe to Comcast, Dish Network, DirecTV, or a host of other providers (or know someone who does…), simply input your account information in the Watch ESPN site and you'll have access to many sporting events including the NBA Finals.

Questionable streaming sites

There exist a wide variety of online streaming sites which grant access to many live sporting events. Although these sites provide largely unrestricted streaming do keep in mind most come packed with spam and pop-up windows. This can be frustrating for most users but with some patience you'd have access to every single NBA Finals game. We don't recommend heavy use of these streaming sites as even the slightest miscalculated click can infect your computer with a nasty virus.

Once you find these streaming sites on the Web you'll notice the deep selection of games available to you, though you often sacrifice access for quality. Sites like First Fow Sports, Justin.tv, or VIPBox Sports are some of the most popular when it comes to streaming sporting events online. While these might be of use, the hassle of avoiding spam and dealing with low quality playback often make these services more of an inconvenience than a help.

Note: As a rule of thumb never click on any link which asks you to download any HD Players, update your streaming software, or to install any "required" media players. These are often just spam links which could infect your computer with viruses.

Other resources

Reddit's NBA Page

NBA Finals aside, the NBA subreddit is one of the best resources for NBA fans. From posts covering breaking news and articles to fan opinion pieces you'll never have a shortage of NBA content to check out. With the NBA Finals taking center stage this week expect to see a litany of posts relating to the epic showdown. Redditors also post links to devoted streams and game threads giving you an abundance of access to the coverage of each game. Keep in mind some of the links provided are like the questionable streaming sites from above and may harm your computer. Nonetheless, Reddit's NBA page is a fantastic resource with ample content for all NBA fans.

ESPN Gamecast

ESPN's Gamecast feature provides up to the second updates for any in-progress sporting event. It's not a video streaming option, but the Gamecast program is an excellent way to keep up with NBA Finals action. You'll have quick access to the box score, animations showing real-time when players take shots, and access to social media buzz from Twitter and Facebook. If video is out of the question, then keeping track via Gamecast is a more than reliable alternative.

ESPN Radio

ESPN offers access to its many radio shows through the ESPN Radio site which will include all NBA Finals games. There's nothing like listening to a radio broadcaster lose his or her mind when a big play happens and this year's Finals is sure to be chock full of highlights. If video streaming isn't an option, tuning in to the radio broadcast is a solid alternative.
