6.45 Billion Naira Calabar By Pass Road Ready For Commissioning

The 6.9 Kilometer Margaret Ekpo International Airport by-pass road which cost the Cross River State Government 6.45 billion naira

The 6.9 Kilometer Margaret Ekpo International Airport by-pass road which cost the Cross River State Government 6.45 billion naira is to be commissioned soon even as government has paid over 200 million naira compensation to property owners along that route.

Mr Legor Idagbo, the Cross River State Commissioner for Works who showed newsmen round the road on Monday said 2.8 kilometers of the road was through swamp and difficult terrain.

"The road stretches through challenging terrain with 2.8 kilometers being swamp such that the contractor, Chinese Central Engineering and Construction Company, CCECC, had to deploy new technology, geogrid, to get through the swampy area".

He said the dual carriageway road will reduce traffic congestion on roads in the city center and terminates at the Marian Road Extension, which links the Murtala Mohammed Highway with an interchange.

"Much of the work has been completed and certainly before the end of the year, it will be commissioned so that those heavy duty trucks which ply Akpabuyo will no longer destroy our roads in the center of town".

The Works Commissioner explained that right from its design to completion, the bypass is made to carry high capacity vehicles and will comfortably accommodate articulated vehicles which daily throng the UNICEM factory to carry cement which will greatly reduce the pressure on roads in the city center which are not constructed to accommodate vehicles with high axle load.

He said the distance for vehicles going to the Margaret Ekpo International Airport and Akpabuyo Local Government from outside the city which hitherto take over half an hour will now use less than five minutes to get to their destination. "It takes you barely three to four minutes to get to the airport if you are travelling from outside the city to the Airport which used to be over half an hour through the city center and the economic benefit of this is unquantifiable".

Mr Idagbo said much value has been added to landed property along the route as many people are flocking to the area to erect residential buildings and business places.
