Good news this weekend for anyone who's found Twitter's Direct Message feature to be a frustrating experience — the platform's apps for iOS and Android are being upgraded to provide better conversation support and deleted messages that sync across all devices.
The fact that you can still delete a DM in a mobile app and have it reappear when you log in on the Web is testament to how low down in Twitter's priorities the service is. Yet with apps such as WhatsApp and Line invading handsets all across the world, Twitter needs to up its instant messaging game and ensure a smoother experience for users.
"Over the next few weeks, we're rolling out an update that makes deleting DMs more consistent across Web and mobile," tweeted the Twitter support account on Friday, to a flurry of favoriting. "We're also making an update to the Twitter iPhone and Android apps that will allow you to access your entire DM history."
If you're the type of person who sends and receives a lot of 140-character private messages then the updates should make it much easier to stay on top of your conversations. Twitter chief Dick Costolo has previously hinted that Twitter could even take a leaf from Snapchat's book and support disappearing direct messages.
Twitter became a publicly traded company back in November, which means it needs to work harder than ever to engage (and make money from) its users. The platform had a great World Cup, breaking many of its own records, but there's more work to be done to grow the network in the face of an increasing number of competing apps.
Would the improvements tempt you to use the DM option more often? Or are you a die-hard Facebook Messenger user? Let us know in the comments.
