ABUJA — THE Federal Government has assured that the target of power generation peaking at40,000mw by year 2020 would be realised, with the expectation of more capacities from Mambilla, Zungeru large hydros, grid power from solar, wind and coal-to-power initiative.
Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Power, Amb. Godknows Igali, gave the assurance while playing host to the team of the body of permanent
secretaries in the civil service on peer review mission.
He said the review was meant to assist the creation of service-wide
framework that would enable Ministries, Departments and Agencies, MDAs, deliver on their mandates.
Igali identified the key element of this initiative as it would make the civil service more responsive and accountable to Nigerian people.
Igali said the bottomline of his ministry's mandate was to provide
policy framework for the realisation of electricity for domestic and
industrial uses of Nigerians.
"For a long time, government has regulated the sector, the attending
problems have been with us for long, now the determination of
government is to change gear and allow the private sector to come in,"
he said.
Expressing optimism that Nigerians would soon experience uninterrupted
power, Igali said that although government had not privatised
transmission, it was encouraging the private sector to come into the
sub-sector, considering the huge investment required in the evacuation of power.
In his remarks, the Head of Service, Alhaji Bukar Aji, commended the
manner the leadership of the sector had handled privatisation adjudged
to be the biggest on the continent, ascribing the feat to openness,
purposeful and transparent leadership.
He promised to align the civil service with the Transformation Agenda
of the President by religiously implementing government's
people-oriented policies and programmes.
Minister of Power, Prof. Chinedu Nebo, commended the Head of Service. for upholding the ethics of public service with passion.
