Deep Lore and History
The Witcher series of games are actually based on a Polish novel by Andrzej Sapkowski. While the books and the games tell entirely different stories, the previous two Witcher games provide plenty of backdrop for Geralt's final conclusion. If you're like me, the idea of starting a series on the third entry can be a bit daunting. Kotaku has posted an excellentWitcher 3 primer for those of us coming in late, and by all accounts, the story of The Witcher 3 does a great job bringing new players up to speed. The world of The Witcher is deep, with its roots running back into the previous two games, plus all of the accumulated lore from Sapkowski's stories.
Realistic World
The Witcher 3 boasts a world teeming with activity. Realistic night and day cycles, weather effects, economy and NPCs with full day/night activities make the world come alive on screen. However, it's the way The Witcher 3 depicts a society that may be the most telling. The Witcher 3 showcases some of the worst aspects of human history, especially prevalent in the Middle Ages: slavery, racism, sexism – all of these issues are dealt with head-on and not shied away from. The world of The Witcher is believable not just because it is teeming with life, but rather how life is depicted. In addition, every action you make will affect the world in some way, although the changes are not always noticeable immediately.
