For spring, '60s mod was one of the biggest trends of the season with Marc Jacobs showing it through various permutations of black and white stripes, from skirt suits to long gowns. He continued the mod streak at Louis Vuitton where he had models descend escalators in pairs wearing variations of check patterns from bandeau tops to A-line coats to shift dresses. It was, to sum it up in one word, pop. The '60s influence was also visible at Michael Kors' collection which had doses of stripes, graphic checks and A-line shapes.
The idea of dressed and undressed was also a big statement for spring with designers like Reed Krakoff and Prabal Gurung showing dresses and separates layered with sheer organza or chiffon. Jason Wu practically devoted his entire collection to the theme with his many sheer numbers and the leather outfits fused with lace and tulle. Donna Karan and Tom Ford also showed pieces that hinted at skin without actually revealing it.
For his final collection for Balenciaga, Nicolas Ghesquiere showed one of the most resounding trends for spring 2013 — ruffles — big, flouncy waves of fabric like modernized versions of those seen on flamenco dancers. Ruffles were also seen at Givenchy, Gucci and Peter Pilotto.
Grunge wanted to make itself felt this fall with
designers showing an assemblage of looks that featured anywhere from plaid shirts, leather trousers, biker boots and micro-printed dresses like at Saint Laurent. Allusions to grunge were also seen at 3.1 Phillip Lim, Versace and Junya Watanabe.
Supersized coats became the must-have item for fall 2013. Think exaggerated shapes with a cocoon effect. Stella McCartney is the master when it comes to tailored mannish coats. Kenzo showed it in a belted version with sloping shoulders. And Alexander Wang paired his oversized coats with boxing glove-like fur mittens.
And to show that fashion rules like no white after labor day are archaic, designers pushed for the idea of winter whites — a refreshing palate and palette cleanser after all the leather and black of spring 2013. From Celine to Salvatore
Ferragamo to Giambattista Valli, white and its offshoots like cream and ecru made for a glorious fall/winter 2013 season.
