In the days following the 15-year-old's suicide, cyber-bullies posted mean messages under memorial pictures of the girl, including one the read '#f@ck Cora" and another one that called her a 'b@tch.'
At her school, one student was overheard saying she was glad Cora was dead, while a memorial poster taped to the dead girl's locker was ripped up. Some of Cora's tormentors even showed up at her wake, angering her mourning friends.
It was just the kind of abuse that Cora had attempted to escape from when she took her own life on May 10.
The girl left a long, detailed suicide note explaining why she believed she could not go on. Among the reasons, she listed four fellow junior highers and their torments for causing her so much pain.
'There were complex issues," Commander Matt Delp of the Pickerington police explained. 'She wrote about her home life and feeling unloved. Her mother and stepfather – the father she had known for 14 years – were getting a divorce. Her boyfriend had broken up with her the day before. There were many reasons."
Police also found that the girl had been bullied at school and interviewed the four students the girl named as bullies in her final note.
Despite the fact the police verified that Cora had been subject to taunting from her classmates, Delp said the conduct, while mean-spirited, fell short of a punishable offense.
"She was the victim of some name calling,' he explained. 'While it's troublesome, it doesn't warrant bringing charges against the students."
Cora's mother, though, said something must be done to help bullied and troubled kids like Cora know they are not alone and can reach out for help.
"The system is failing. A lot of other kids are suffering," she said. "They need to know there are other people out there to help. They don't need to keep it inside."
