Great Britain speed skater Elise Christie, who was disqualified from all three of her events: "I'm really thankful to everyone back home for their support," says the Scot, 23. "I probably would not have made it back on ice without it, they've lifted everyone's spirit. But I'm glad to be going back home."

The next stage of the ceremony glances ahead to 2018, when Pyeongchang becomes the third Asian host of the Winter Olympics. Two Korean songstresses are follow by a white suit-wearing crooner - probably their version of Robbie Williams - for a presentation entitled 'A Journey Together'. Korean athletes who have competed in Sochi also join in a performance which, so I'm told, resembles a landscape painting using traditional Korean colours and shapes.

Winter Paralympics are coming
"The Olympics are drawing to a close, but that isn't the end of the Sochi 2014 Games.

"The Winter Paralympics begin on 7 March where Great Britain - boosted by world leading alpine skiers Kelly Gallagher and Jade Etherington - are targeting 2-6 medals.
"I will be part of our team in Russia for those Games and will bring you extensive coverage across the BBC Sport website and BBC Radio 5 Live."

Now for an important moment in the Games process - the handover of the Olympic flag. Flying proudly alongside the Russia and Greece flags, it is lowered to the sound of the Olympic anthem before the mayor of the next host city - South Korea's Pyeongchang - is presented with it in a symbolic gesture. You probably can't help but think of London mayor Boris Johnson waving the Olympic flag like a madman at Beijing 2008. I can't.

Matthew Markham: Sad to see the Winter Olympics finish, really enjoyed it! Snowboarding rules.
Ann Without an E: Thing is that although we're not very good at it and they're low public participation - winter sports are VERY armchair friendly.

As well as a craze for wearing loud clothes and onesies, another popular pastime in the Sochi Olympic village has been posing on the Olympic Rings and posting pictures on social media, such as this one from the Danish curling team.

Now for something completely different - a circus act. No, I'm not talking about any of the competitors for whom it did not go to plan in Sochi. I'm talking about clowns, trapeze artists and the like. Russia has a rich circus culture and chance is that you will have seen the world-famous Moscow State Circus in a usually-barren field near you in the UK at some point. So here the art of Russian circus is celebrated.

Mary Ellen: Loving the closing ceremony Winter Olympics - my daughter & I transfixed by beautiful colours & choreography.
Joe Malley: All a bit too cultured, this is what opening ceremonies should be like. Closing ones should be a massive party.
