US President Barack Obama has met 16 lawmakers to discuss ways of reforming the country's intelligence
services. It follows a string of damaging revelations by former NSA contractor Edward Snowden.
US President Barack Obama speaks in Washington on January 7, 2014.
At Thursday's meeting, Obama was asked to clearly explain to the American public why collecting their phone data protects national security. Obama is set to announce decisions on intelligence reforms in a speech, possibly as early as next week.
The changes are likely to include restrictions on spying on foreign leaders, stronger rules on storing bulk telephone data and the appointment of a civil liberties defender in
secret intelligence courts.
