BOXING: Froch settles debate: Champion beats Groves in rematch with eight round KO

Sudden impact: Carl Froch lands the knockout blow in the eighth round (Peter Cziborra)

CARL FROCH, the pride of Nottingham, produced a stunning punch to knock out George Groves in the eighth round of their rematch at Wembley last night.

The fight may not have lived up to the hype but the conclusion certainly did. After cautious, technical boxing from both men, with neither obviously ahead, Froch delivered a one-two that ended Groves' challenge and vast pretensions.

Froch, the IBF and WBA world champion at super-middleweight, keeps his belts. He is entitled to feel vindicated. Groves, his pomposity punctured, must return to the drawing board.

Froch, 36, insisted he had underestimated Groves before the first contest in November and that he would put everything right. So he did. Groves, 26, who had been flattered by Froch's lack of professionalism in the first encounter, was undone by a weakness that had been apparent earlier in his career. When hit cleanly, he falls.
