Plants Vs. Zombies: Garden Warfare grows with microtransactions and June PC release

Fans of PopCap Games' lighthearted take on multiplayer shooters, Plants vs. Zombies: Garden Warfare, will be happy to see that their diligent watering has paid off, as the game keeps on growing. After adding a host of new maps and characters in the Zomboss Downs DLC earlier this month, publisher Electronic Arts has announced that it will be adding in microtransactions so eager players can more quickly purchase the content they want.

Starting next week, players will be able to purchase in-game currency from the Sticker Shop, allowing them faster access to the new packs and character variants of their choice. Although some might bemoan the ever-encroaching prevalence of microtransactions into mainstream games, this fast-track option to pay directly for a chosen packs will be a boon to some of those that felt the game was otherwise too stingy with its coin rewards. What's more, all players will still be beholden to Lady Luck, as purchasing a sticker pack carries no guarantees in terms of the content received.

Furthermore, a whole new crop of players will be able to join the fracas with the announcement that Plants vs. Zombies: Garden Warfare will be available for PC on June 24. Starting today, players can pre-order the Digital Deluxe edition on Origin for $35, which includes two sticker packs, 80,000 in-game coins, and exclusive character customization options. Those that pre-order the standard edition for $5 less will receive the two free sticker packs but neither of the other bonuses.
