Super Eagles will surprise the world in Brazil

Victor Nwaribeaku is the Chief Executive Officer of VCN Sports International Limited.

In this interview with IFEANYI EDUZOR he speaks about the chances of the Super Eagles at the forthcoming world cup in Brazil and plans by his company to make Nigerians have a feel of the world cup.

Excerpts Super Eagles will be participating in the forthcoming Brazil 2014 world cup; what are your expectations at the Mundial? I have no doubt in my mind that the Super Eagles will do very well in the greatest football tournament in the world come June this year.

When you look at the team, you will discover that Coach Stephen Keshi is doing a very good work in the team. And right now, people are beginning to be proud of the Super Eagles. When you cast your mind back to the last Nations Cup, you will remember that nobody gave the team chance to get to the finals but they surprised all to lift the trophy.

Having said this, I believe they will give a good account of themselves in Brazil and surpass the expectations of Nigerians in that tournament. Are you not afraid that Nigeria is in the same Group with Argentina? It beats my imagination when people continue to exercise fears over Argentina and in doing this they fail to realize that Argentines themselves are also afraid of Nigeria because they know we have quality players that can cause heartache to any team at any time.

I want Nigerians to remember that the South Americans has never found it easy beating Nigeria in competitive football; they have always struggled to defeat us even when the dreaded Maradona was a part of their team.

I believe that with the job Keshi has done on the team, the Super Eagles will be ready for any opposition when hostilities begin in Brazil in June.

People should also know that football is not mathematics because anybody God says will carry the day will definitely win. Do you have any player in the Super Eagles who you think will be exceptional at the World Cup? Most of the players are good and I believe that they are going to make their mark in Brazil. Although they are not as good as my idols, Austin Jay Jay Okocha and Kanu Nwankwo but the transformation Coach Stephen Keshi is doing on the team will bring out the best in them and I look forward to the team being better than the Super Eagles of 1994. Can you tell us what motivated you going into sports equipment business?

What really motivated me venturing into sports wears business was the love I have for sports right from my youth.

When I was in school, I participated actively in sports especially football and at a stage, I became the Captain of my school team. When I left school, I worked as an apprentice under the Chief Executive Officer of S.O and Brothers Sports Limited in the person of Chief.S.O. Okoli and after serving him for eight years, he opened a shop for me and from there by the Grace of God, the business has been growing which necessitated me opening an ultra modern shop recently at the National Stadium, Surulere Lagos which is equipped with the latest state of the arts sports materials where one can come in and buy quality materials from Europe at affordable prize. You just opened an ultra modern sports shop at the National Stadium Surulere, Lagos what makes it different from others? You are quite aware that a lot of Nigerians are now engaging in one sporting activity or the other to enable them keep fit and burn out calories.

People have come to realize that without sports they cannot live a healthy life but with sports, you will be agile and healthy and might not even need to see a Doctor and this was what made me think of expanding the shop to accommodate all types of sporting materials and I want to assure Nigerians that in this year of World Cup, we are out to serve them better to ensure that the Super Eagles perform well at the Mundial.

You know that Nigerians like quality products and that accounted for our getting all our goods from Europe. And from next year we intend to move to Abuja and from there to Port Harcourt, Enugu and Owerri to serve our customers better.

And I want my customers to believe in VCN Sports and be assured that they are getting good products at affordable prices with guarantee. What is your take on the issue of Nigerians supporting foreign clubs instead of their local teams? It is quite unfortunate that Nigerians does not believe in our local league .But for me, the team I support is Enyimba because they are my pioneer customers.

All there kits were supplied to them by my company and personally, I will continue to support the team. The team needs the support of all especially when one considers that they were the first Nigerian club to win the CAF Champions League. Although the team is not doing well now but I believe they will soon come out of their problem.
