Liverpool v Tottenham Hotspur: three key questions

As the Reds prepare to host Tim Sherwood's men, we look at the big talking points before Sunday's game

Will Brendan Rodgers stick or twist?

The Reds boss has named the same starting XI for the last two games - but may be tempted to make a change or two on Sunday.

Firstly, he will be looking at his defence. Rodgers has selected the same back four for five games in a row, with clean sheets coming at St Mary's and Old Trafford. But three goals were shipped against Swansea, another three at Cardiff… and there were some worrying moments on Wednesday as Sunderland pressured for an equaliser in their 2-1 defeat at Anfield.

Could it be time to recall the fit-again Mamadou Sakho? The Frenchman has been patiently waiting his turn on the bench for the last three games and calls are growing for his return.

Moving further upfield, Raheem Sterling has been dropped to the bench for the last two games following his vibrant display in the 3-0 victory at Anfield. Philippe Coutinho could make way for the flying England forward. Would Joe Allen benefit from a rest? Lucas Leiva is waiting in the wings. There are options aplenty for Rodgers.

Can Steven Gerrard equal Kenny Dalglish's goal tally?

The skipper's crucial free kick against Sunderland on Wednesday was his 171st goal for the Reds, putting him one behind the legendary Kenny Dalglish.

Is the script written for Sunday? A Gerrard winner against Spurs at the Kop end?

Boss Brendan Rodgers spoke in glowing terms of his midfield anchorman this afternoon - and does not feel his goal threat has been blunted by a switch to a more deep-lying position this season. Gerrard is on a hot streak, with six goals in his last seven games.

"It's incredible really," said Rodgers. "People wondered about his position and would it affect him, moving back. It hasn't stopped his goal threat. He can dictate the game from behind. Because of his incredible intelligence he could play in any position on the field.

"To equal someone of Kenny's quality and status, it shows you the quality he has. And he's got a few more years to go."

Have Spurs improved under Tim Sherwood?

Not really. Previous boss Andre-Villas Boas was unceremoniously sacked by Spurs in December following their humiliating 5-0 home defeat to Liverpool.

The loss left them five points outside the top four. They are seven points adrift now.

AVB won 17 of his 26 games in charge this season, with a win ratio of 65%. Sherwood has recorded 10 wins from 21 matches. The maths on that one is relatively simple.

AVB's side recorded an impressive 14 clean sheets in their 26 games, compared to five from 21 for Sherwood.

The Spurs boss launched into an outspoken rant after the 4-0 loss to Chelsea - accusing his players of lacking character - earlier this month. He says he has noticed an improvement since then, but one win in the four games since shows this has not quite translated itself into results yet.
